Structural cell biology | Post-doc position

Mitotic spindle stability is important for accurate chromosome segregation. We are characterising protein complexes involved in stabilising the mitotic spindle using structural and cell biological approaches (Nixon et al. 2015 eLife; Burgess et al. 2018 EMBO J). We are interested in studying how these protein complexes assemble and how they attach to microtubules. The goal is to understand how the kinetochore fibres of the spindle are stabilised normally and how this process becomes misregulated in cancer.
You will join the laboratories of Stephen Royle in the Centre for Mechanochemical Cell Biology, Warwick Medical School and Richard Bayliss in The Astbury Centre, University of Leeds. We use structural and biophysical methods, biochemistry, imaging (light and electron microscopy), and gene editing to understand the role of protein complexes that stabilise microtubules within the mitotic spindle in human cells. We offer outstanding environments for discovery science in two of the best universities in the UK.
You will have a good honours degree and have, or expect shortly to have, a relevant PhD, plus experience in cell biology/biochemistry or structural studies, strong scientific interest and motivation. A strong publication record is preferred.
Where you have not yet been awarded your PhD, any offer made to you will be an under-appointment to the post of Research Assistant at a salary of £29,515 per annum. Once your PhD has been awarded, you will be appointed to the substantive post of Research Fellow at a salary within the range shown above.

>Post-graduate


There are two routes to come to the lab as a post-graduate student. Firstly, we host mini-project students from the various programmes in Warwick and these may developed into a full PhD research project. Secondly, students can come direct to the lab to start their PhD. There are currently several sources of funding for each of these possibilities. The lab participates in two MRes/PhD programmes: the MRC Doctoral Training Partnership, the Midlands Integrative Biosciences Training Partnership. Other possibilities are programmes in Synthetic Biology or Complexity. To come direct to the lab, funding can be obtained from an external source or from a Chancellor's International Studentship or WMS Scholarship. Deadlines for all of these are in January. Contact us if you are interested.
